A large chunk of public and sponsors’ money has been ploughed into some daft ‘festival’ called Love2BinSheffield this month. The idea is to celebrate whatever it is that makes Sheffield ‘great’. I’ve seen the programme of events, and I can assure that not one thing on that list contributes to my understanding of Sheffield’s greatness. There is, however, a funfair in town. Here’s a glimpse of one of the rides, partially reflected in the classy old John Lewis store that is soon to be torn down: another classy chunk of what makes Sheffield vibrant and interesting that is about to be replaced with bland mediocrity. Why do we entrust such important planning approvals to people with no architectural training?
